❓ FAQ

Common grant questions

Which UK heat pump grant gives the most money?
Scotland's Home Energy Scotland Grant — up to £9,000 total (£7,500 base + £1,500 rural bonus for island and remote properties), plus an optional 0% interest loan up to £12,500 to cover the rest. England and Wales offer £7,500 via the BUS scheme. Northern Ireland's scheme is much smaller (£400-£1,700, income-tested).
Can I combine UK grants?
No — you can't claim BUS in England/Wales and HES in Scotland for the same property (you live in one). You can combine BUS with ECO4 (low-income insulation grants — useful to clear EPC recommendations first), and Scotland's HES Grant pairs with the HES Loan. Local authority grants (some London boroughs, Welsh councils) sometimes stack with BUS — check with your installer.
Do I need an EPC for any heat pump grant?
Yes for BUS (England & Wales) and HES Scotland. The EPC must be valid (under 10 years old) and have no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity-wall insulation. The Northern Ireland scheme doesn't require an EPC but does require income proof.
How long does grant approval take?
BUS (England/Wales): Pre-approval ~2 weeks; final payout to installer ~4-6 weeks after commissioning. HES Scotland: Survey + approval ~6-8 weeks; payout ~4 weeks after install. NI Boiler Replacement: ~8-12 weeks end-to-end.
Are grants ending in 2026?
No. BUS was extended in the 2024 Spring Statement through at least 2028 with £1.5bn funding. HES Scotland and the NI Boiler Replacement Scheme are ongoing with no expiry date. The 2025 Welsh government review confirmed Nest funding continuation.
